SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior guard Lauren Pedersen was named the Big West women's basketball Player of the Week after leading UC Santa Barbara to a pair of victories to open conference play.
Pedersen scored a team-high 16 points, grabbed six rebounds, handed out four assists and had three steals in a 66-48 win over Long Beach State on Jan. 2. Pedersen went 7-for-15 from the floor, tying her career-high in field goals made.
Following it up vs. preseason favorite UC Riverside on Sunday, Pedersen had a game-high 21 points on 7 of 17 shooting, while grabbing five rebounds and tallying three steals. She matched her career-high with five three-pointers made, canning 5 of 8 from downtown in the 47-40 win.
"Lauren is obviously a tremendous player and she does so much more for our team than you can see in the terrific numbers she puts up," UCSB head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "She's been our floor leader all year. She had a huge weekend and I'm proud of her and the entire team that she's recognized by the conference this week."
It is Pedersen's first career Big West Player of the Week accolade as she averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor.
For the season, Pedersen leads UCSB averaging 12.8 points per game and leads the team with 4.9 rebounds per contest. She also has dished out a team-high 48 assists while nabbing a team-leading 37 steals.
UCSB, currently 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the Big West, take to the road this week. The Gauchos will face UC Irvine on Thursday at the Bren Events at 7 p.m. and will play at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 5 p.m. Both games can be heard in Santa Barbara on 990 AM or watched online at UCSBgauchos.com
