The Tradition Continues
Ariana Gnekow enters her sophomore season at UCSB after an impressive rookie campaign in which she appeared in all but one of Santa Barbara's 33 contests. The 5-foot-7 guard is the next player from Santa Ynez expected to have an excellent career in the tradition of former Gaucho greats Kristi Rohr and Erin Alexander. After successful rehabilitation from a knee injury suffered in high school, Gnekow has a year under her belt and is ready to contribute to the team's success in 2007-08. A cerebral player that leaves it all on the floor, Gnekow is sure to follow in the footsteps of of Rohr (1996-2000) and Alexander (1993-97), two players that rank second and fifth on the UCSB all-time career scoring charts, respectively. Feeling It
Ariana Gnekow had a three-game stretch in early December that resulted in her top three scoring performances of the season. The Santa Ynez, Calif. native reached double figures for the first time in her collegiate career when she tallied 10 points on 3-for-5 shooting to help lead the Gauchos to a 51-49 road victory at Richmond December 4. Three days later Gnekow made 3-of-4 attempts from the field and scored nine points in UCSB's 62-57 win over Weber state in the Thunderdome. She then made one of her three starts on the year against Loyola Marymount and scored a career-best 11 points -- nine of which came at the free-throw line -- in a 63-58 home loss to the Lions. Those three scoring totals would stand as her top three efforts the rest of the season. 2006-07
