The MASH Unit
During her junior campaign, Debby Caine's unofficial residence was the UCSB Athletic Training facility in Robertson Gymnasium. She dealt with a litany of early-season ailments in 2001-02, ranging from a concussion suffered off-the-court to a dislocated pinky to a case of tonsillitis, the sum of which forced her to sit out four games and see limited floor time in three others. However, after spending much time in the care of team trainer Karla Judge, Caine declared herself fit to play in a Jan. 26 victory at rival Long Beach State by dishing off a game-high and season-best eight assists versus only three turnovers.

Ballin' in the Big West
The Gauchos' 80-62 triumph in Long Beach served as Caine's springboard to a very solid conference season and commenced a four-game streak against Big West opponents during which she amassed 25 helpers and just 11miscues. The native of Huntington Beach, Calif., didn't miss another contest the rest of the year, and tied Mia Fisher for the team lead in assists during league play with 63. By the end of the season Caine's name could be found amongst the Big West's top ten players in assist-to-turnover ratio as well as helpers per game - both in conference action and overall games. In addition, Caine enjoyed the top-two rebounding efforts of her collegiate career - both six-board performances - in 2002 vs. league foes LBSU and UC Riverside.

Cut From the Same Cloth
Debby Caine and Jess Hansen entered the Gaucho program together as freshmen in 1999-2000, and will end their careers four years later having etched their names on many of the same all-time top-10 lists. A friendly season-long contest might ensue between the two guards to see who can set a school record for three-point shooting accuracy, with Hansen currently holding a slight 41.7% to 41.5% advantage. However Caine has a leg up on her backcourt mate in total assists, ranking seventh in UCSB history with 308 career helpers, and has also made 77.4% of her free-throws, fourth-best among all Gauchos. Caine's name can also be found close to Hansen's in career three-pointers (97) and attempts from behind the arc (188), where she ranks fourth and seventh, respectively.
