SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Former UC Santa Barbara guard Makala Roper is headed overseas to play for Norwegian club Sandvika Basketballklubb, making her the second Gaucho this year to sign a professional basketball contract.
Roper was a consistent contributor during her four-year run with the Gauchos, averaging 7.2 points per game on 36.5 percent shooting from three-point range. One of the best sharpshooters the program has seen, Roper totaled 152 career triples, good for fifth all-time at UCSB. Her 840 total points were the most of any Gaucho from 2014-18.
"Playing professionally is something I have always dreamed about," Roper said. "Having this opportunity just confirmed that you should never give up on your dreams. I'm very excited for this new journey."
Following a solid freshman campaign, Roper's offensive prowess would hit its stride during her sophomore season, when she averaged a team-leading 11.8 points in 29.8 minutes per game. Shooting at an efficient 37.5 percent clip from range, she knocked down 63 treys, tied for eighth all-time in a single season.
While her numbers would drop during her junior year, the Seattle, Wash. native was at her most efficient as a senior. In 2017-18, she set career-highs in field goal (.400), three-point (.432) and free throw percentage (.733), averaging 6.2 points per game.
Roper joins Drew Edelman – who recently signed a contract with top-flight Israeli team A.S. Ramat Hasharon – as one of two former Gauchos to extend their playing careers professionally within the last three months. Roper's season with Sandvika Basketballklubb is set to begin on September 23.
