Melissa Zornig has made her career off precision shooting from three-point range, but she's by no means a one-dimensional player.
Last season, Zornig expanded her game by improving on her drives and creating space for shots. The changes were worthwhile as she reached career-bests in field goal shooting (37.9) and assists per game (2.2).
The Coto de Caza, Calif. native highlighted her junior season when she dropped 24 points on UC Davis in the Thunderdome. She was the only player to score in double digits that game, and hit a career-high five shots from beyond the arc. Her point total was the most in a single game for a Gaucho that season.
As a sophomore, Zornig lit up the scoreboard as she averaged 16.7 points per game in the Big West Tournament, helping UCSB capture the conference crown.
Perhaps her marquee performance of that tournament was Zornig's 23-point performance in the semifinals against Pacific. Not only did her point total lead the Gaucho's to 84 points– the most in the Carlene Mitchell era– but she also added a game-high four assists and two three-pointers.
For her standout performances throughout the playoffs, Zornig was named to the all-tournament squad.
She and the rest of the Gauchos will open the 2013-14 season on Monday, Nov. 4 in the Thunderdome when they host Vanguard in an exhibition game.
Great season ticket packages are available for the Gauchos. This year's home schedule includes plenty of high-profile matchups including Arizona, Utah State, and San Diego State, a rematch of last season's WNIT game.
