SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Nicole Nesbit led UC Santa Barbara with 17 points, but it was not enough to keep up with Northern Arizona’s offense in the 79-56 decision at the Thunderdome on Thursday night.

UCSB Mounts Comeback Win at Pepperdine
MALIBU, Calif. – Behind Nicole Nesbit’s career-high 26 points, UC Santa Barbara overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat Pepperdine 77-69 at the Firestone Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

UCSB Visits Pepperdine, Hosts Northern Arizona This Week
The Gauchos will be making the short trip down to Malibu to take on Pepperdine to open this week’s play. UCSB have so far gone 1-1 as the away team, most recently defeating Santa Clara 67-62. Santa Barbara last played Pepperdine in Coach Mitchell’s first year at the helm in 2001 and defeated the Waves 55-44.On Thursday, the Gauchos will return home to host Northern Arizona before going on a 10-day break for finals week. It will be the first time since 1990 that UCSB played the Lumberjacks when the Gauchos won 77-59.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Led by Destini Mason’s career-high 23 points, the Gauchos foiled Hampton’s second-half comeback and clinched the 66-62 victory at the Thunderdome on Saturday night.

UCSB Returns Home to Host Hampton, San Diego State
Returning to the Thunderdome this week, UCSB looks to pick up their first win at home since its season opener. The Gauchos will play Hampton for the first time in program history on Tuesday. Saturday’s meeting with San Diego State will be a rematch of last year’s WNIT First Round game.

Gauchos Pick Up First Road Win at Santa Clara 67-62
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara jumped back into the win column with a gritty 67-62 victory in Santa Clara. The trio of Gaucho seniors led UCSB with 50 combined points. Snapping a two-game losing streak, the Gauchos even their record at 2-2, while the Broncos drop to 1-4.

Seniors Combine for 54 in Loss to St. Mary's
MORAGA, Calif. – Despite their best offensive performance of the season, UC Santa Barbara could not keep up with St. Mary’s who came out on top in the high-scoring affair 89-79. Melissa Zornig had a career night, registering game-highs of nine assists and four steals, while also leading the Gauchos with 19 points.

UCSB Embarks on Road Trip to St. Mary's, Santa Clara
The Gauchos will embark on their first road trip of the season this weekend. Their first stop will be in Moraga, Calif. when they take on undefeated St. Mary’s College. On Saturday, UCSB will visit Santa Clara which enters this week still searching for its first win. The road swing will also mark the first time this year the Gauchos will play two games in the same weekend.

Arizona Edges UCSB, 51-49
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UCSB battled Arizona down to the wire, but it was the Wildcats who came up with the narrow win with the 51-49 final score. As the game was tied 49-49, LaBrittney Jones sunk two free throws with 11 seconds left to take the late advantage. The Wildcats, with two fouls to give, fouled UCSB on back-to-back inbound passes, stopping the clock with 6.8 seconds left.

UCSB Signs Four Standouts to National Letters of Intent
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara has signed four high school standouts to National Letters of Intent, it was announced by Head Coach Carlene Mitchell on Thursday. "Our staff has assembled a group of young ladies that have the ability to do special things for our program,” Mitchell said. “All four have the passion, drive, and ability to make an immediate impact on our program."

Gauchos Wrap Up Homestand with Arizona
On Sunday, UCSB played its first game ever against Occidental College and came away with a 76-54 blowout victory. Since Carlene Mitchell took the helm two seasons ago, the 22-point differential is the largest win margin the Gauchos have recorded. UCSB held a lead as large as 26 points and never trailed by more than six. Nicole Nesbit led Santa Barbara with 17 points and six assists, while fellow senior Destini Mason added 16 points.

Gauchos Trounce Tigers 76-54 in Season Opener
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team put together a complete game effort to blowout Occidental College 76-54 in their season opener. The Gauchos’ point total was the most since they dropped an identical amount at Loyola Marymount last season.

UCSB Hosts Occidental College to Open 2013-14 Season
On Sunday, UCSB hosted Vanguard in its only exhibition game of the season. The Lions -who are the preseason No. 1 team in the NAIA- held off the Gauchos’ furious second half comeback to get the 69-66 win. Nicole Nesbit finished the game by leading the Gauchos in points (15), rebounds (7), and assists (6). The senior guard’s numbers helped UCSB eliminate the 16 point deficit they faced in the second half, as she scored 13 of her points in the final 20 minutes.

Kirsten Tilleman Named Rhodes Scholarship Finalist
Former UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball player Kirsten Tilleman has been selected as a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, it was announced Wednesday. The Rhodes Scholarship is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious international fellowship awards in the world. The scholarship offers 32 American students the opportunity to continue their academic studies at Oxford University.

Gauchos' Comeback Falls Short in 69-66 Loss to Vanguard
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After battling back from 16 points down, the UCSB fell short in completing their comeback as it fell to Vanguard 69-66 in their season opening exhibition. With 13 seconds left, UCSB took the ball up the floor after Nicole Ballestero made two free throws to put the Lions up by three. Onome Jemerigbe brought the ball to the top of the key and found Kristine Brance on the right wing whose last second shot was tipped on its release, ending Gauchos’ tightly fought second-half.

Countdown to Tipoff: Kristine Brance & Mi'Chael Wright
Mi’Chael Wright brings a force in the low post for the Gauchos. Using her athleticism and size, she was able to score an average of 15 points and bring down 290 total rebounds in her senior year at Chaminade College Prep. Wright was named to MaxPrep’s All-California second team as a forward in the same season she was selected as the Southern Section 3A Player of the Year.

Countdown to Tipoff: Onome Jemerigbe
Onome Jemerigbe is quick. Really quick. At point guard, the Gaucho freshman used her speed as a playmaker during her celebrated high school career. Jemerigbe played for nationally renowned St. Mary’s High School in Stockton. With the Rams, she was a part of two CIF State Championship teams, and also reached the state semifinals her junior and senior years.

Hardworking and versatile are two words that describe Destini Mason. How is she hardworking? UCSB Head Coach Carlene Mitchell has labeled the senior guard as a blue-collar worker because of her will to defend on the court and for her willingness to play different positions to put her team in a position to succeed.

Countdown to Tipoff: Melissa Zornig
Melissa Zornig has made her career off precision shooting from three-point range, but she’s by no means a one-dimensional player. Last season, Zornig expanded her game by improving on her drives and creating space for shots. The changes were worthwhile as she reached career-bests in field goal shooting (37.9) and assists per game (2.2).

When the Gauchos need a leader on the floor this season, their eyes will immediately fall on Nicole Nesbit. She first took a leadership role last year as she adjusted to being a perennial starter for UCSB. But even before then, she could be a game changer for her team, even if she was coming off the bench.

Though only having gone through eight full practices, Head Coach Carlene Mitchell is pleased with what she has seen so far, especially from the seniors.

Sweets Continues Basketball Life in Germany
It has been six months since Sweets Underwood played her last basketball game for UCSB, and she has since gone over seas to play professionally in Keltren, Germany. The jump from playing collegiate basketball to the professional ranks can be daunting, but that hasn’t been the case for Underwood.
