Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's cross country teams travel to the University of the Pacific in Stockton this weekend, to compete in the Big West Cross Country Championships.
The Gaucho men's team will be led by juniors Dan Gaston (Huntington Beach, CA) and Josh Horton (Vienna, VA). Gaston and Horton have each been the team's top finisher in two meets this season and Gaston has finished among the top three UCSB runners four times. Most recently, Horton was the team's top finisher at the Cal Poly Invitational and at the Stanford Invitational.
Joining the above duo at the Big West Championships will be Patrick Grimes (San Diego), Noah Lidman (Del Mar, CA), Patrick Longhini (Canyon Country, CA), David Monico (San Jose), Kent Roberts (Huntington Beach, CA), J.T. Service (San Jose) and Booker Tynes (Saratoga, CA).
Last year, the Gauchos finished fourth at the Big West Championships in Denton, TX. In 1997, UCSB won the league title. Overall, the Gauchos have recorded four Big West men's championships.
The Santa Barbara women's team will be in the hunt for the league title. They are led by senior Jessica Lunt (Coronado, CA) and sophomore Katie Appenrodt (Burlingame, CA).
Lunt was the Gauchos top finisher in each of the four races in which she competed this year. Her best finish of the season was a fifth place at the Cal Poly Invitational. She also finished third in a five-way meet between UCSB, Cal Poly, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Westmont. Appenrodt finished first in a dual meet between UCSB and Cal Poly and she was the team's second best finisher (with Lunt the top finisher) in four other competitions.
Joining Lunt and Appenrodt as part of the Gauchos Big West Championship contingent will be Alison Catania (Fullerton, CA), Desiree DeJesus (Walnut, CA), Tiffany DeJesus (Walnut, CA), Lisa Dunn (Fullerton, CA), Tamar Gamliel (Canoga Park, CA), Emily Naughton (Del Mar, CA) and Ali Pearson (Turlock, CA).
The UCSB women's team will be looking to reclaim a Big West Championship they last won in 1996. The Gauchos also won league crowns in 1994 and 1993.
Head coach Pete Dolan has been named Big West Coach of the Year on the men's side and on the women's side two times apiece, a total of four Coach of the Year honors. In addition, Brad Glosser was tabbed as the league's Male Athlete of the Year following the 1995 championship.
