Men Lose To Cal Poly In Season Opener

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UCSB Junior Tim Aukshunas finished second in the Annual Alumni Meet at the 8-kilometer Lagoon Course, but UCSB lost to Cal Poly by a score of 19-43. Aukshanas ran with the lead pack throughout the race and was in the lead for some time until being passed by Mustang junior Phillip Reid in the final stretch. Aukshunas finished in a fine time of 24:56.2, Senior Justin Coburn also cracked the top 10 with a ninth place finish in 25:41.5.

Also scoring with promising performances were cross country newcomers Ben Fletcher in eleventh (25:52.5), Julian DeRubira in fourteenth (26:02.8) and Erik Aardal seventeenth (26:12.3).

The Gauchos were without course record holder Mike Chavez and 2005 cross country conference champion Chris Ashley who sat out in preparation for a long season. Ashley and Chavez will make their debut next week along with other expected contributors Micah Tyhurst, Waleed Totari and JD Krawczyck at the UC Irvine Invitational in Huntington Beach, CA.
