ROCKLIN, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's cross country team used three top-20 finishes to place third at the Big West Championships in Rocklin on Saturday. The UCSB women, led by fourth-place finisher Jessica Lunt, finished seventh.
Josh Horton ran a team-best 25:19 to finish sixth in the men's race. Horton was joined in the top-20 by Dan Gaston who clocked a 25:38 to finish 12th and David Monico who ran a 26:09, good for 19th place. Lunt, the Gaucho women's top runner all year, ran an 18:19 to place fourth on the women's side. She was UCSB's only top-20 finisher.
Junior Adan Boothe (San Jose, Calif.) led Cal Poly to its second straight Big West Conference Men's Cross Country Championship, by running a course-record 24:49 on the eight kilometer course at Sierra College. UC Irvine won the women's cross country championship, place two runners in the top three.
Boothe edged North Texas senior Paul Ndachi (Kiambu, Kenya) by seven seconds, although Ndachi led after the second, third and fourth miles. Boothe, Ndachi (24:56) and Cal Poly senior Darren Holman (25:01, Sonora, Calif.) each eclipsed the course record of 25:08 set two years ago. Cal Poly's team score of 21, comprised of first, third, fourth, fifth and eighth place finishes is the third best team score in the history of the Big West. Boise State (1996) and UC Irvine (1986) each had team scores of 16.
Boothe was named Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, while Cal Poly coach Terry Crawford earned Big West Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. Peters was named Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, while Vince O'Boyle earned Big West Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year honors.
