Gaucho Cross Country Struggles In Indiana

Terre Haute, Indiana - The Gaucho men finished 23rd and the women were 32nd at the 2002 Pre-NCAA Meet on Saturday in Indiana. Led by senior J.T. Service's 62nd-place effort (25:03) in the men's 8000-meter 'Blue' race, and Katie Appenrodt's 55th-place (21:39) finish in the women's 6000-meter 'Blue' race, the Gauchos struggled to the finish on the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on the campus of Indiana State University.

Behind Service, Gaucho junior Jeff Gardina ran a strong race in 95th (25:23), with JC-transfer Ramiro Guillen six seconds back in 108th. True freshman Art Avitia (143rd) and sophomore Scott Brandos (145th) rounded out the Gaucho scoring.

Top-ranked Stanford was the team winner in the men's 'Blue' race, with BYU's Kenyan Kip Kangogo getting the individual win (23:45). In the men's 'White' race, defending NCAA champion Colorado won the team title, as Jorge Torres led the Buffaloes to a 1-2-3 finish with his 23:34 winning effort.

On the women's side, sophomore Desiree Leek (144th, 22:26) ran in the number two spot for the Gauchos, with senior Lisa Dunn behind in 167th (22:45). Freshmen twins Lauren and Lindsay Christman finished in 198th and 200th respectively to seal the scoring.

North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan won the women's 'Blue' race in 19:56, with BYU capturing the team title. While the women's 'White' race saw Scotland's Vicky Gill, competing for Florida State, win in 19:54, ahead of Stanford's winning team.

The Gauchos will send a 'B' group to Fullerton this Friday, with the rest of the team resting for the Big West Conference Championships in Riverside on November 2nd.
