TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The UC Santa Barbara men's cross country team had to face a big challenge on Saturday at the 2007 Pre-Nationals, as they were up against 13 nationally-ranked teams in the men's 8k White Race. The results were mixed for the Gauchos, as the team finished in 24th place with 611 points.

Men's cross country assistant coach Avery Blackwell was well aware of what his team was up against in the race, and was hoping for a stronger performance from his squad.

"The competition was tough, but we also finished behind some of the teams in the west region, which is disappointing," said Blackwell. "We'll definitely be looking to improve our times and run a much better race next time out."

Mike Powers was the top finisher for the Gauchos, running the 8k course in 24:17 to place 73rd. Micah Tyhurst and Julian DeRubira were next, with times of 24:32 (104th) and 24:42 (121st) respectively.

The conditions were perfect for racing in Indiana, which resulted in a number of records being set. Liberty University's Josh McDougal found himself in the unique position of losing and re-breaking the course record on the same day. After Lopez Lamong of Northern Arizona ran a 23:02 in the Blue Race to eclipse McDougal's previous course record of 23:12, McDougal would go on to finish 1st in the White Race later in the day with a time of 22:56.

UTEP were the winners of the White Race, with a team point total of 129. Colorado was 2nd, with North Carolina State rounding out the top 3. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo also had a notable result, finishing 10th with 328 points.

Also competing for UCSB were Scott Smith (148th, 24:57), Tim Aukshunas (211th, 25:37), Spencer Rotan (165th, 25:07), and Erik Aardal (246th, 26:23).

The Gauchos return to action on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Titan Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. The meet will be hosted by Cal State Fullerton, and the men's 8k is scheduled to start at 5:00 P.M.
