Gauchos Win at the UC Irvine Invitational

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara cross country recorded a victory as they competed in their second meet of the 2006 season at the UC Irvine Invitational, a five-mile race at Central Park, in Huntington Beach, on Saturday. UCSB recorded a score of 37 points as seven returners crossed the finish line in the top 20. Big West competitors UC Irvine and Cal Poly also competed in the meet. UC Irvine was second with 83 points followed by Cal Poly in third with 86 points.

The Gaucho trio of Senior Mike Chavez (24:51.5), Senior Chris Ashley (25:05.4) and Junior Micah Tyhurst (25:11.6), finished in the top 10 with second, fifth and seventh respectively. The trio was in a pack through 3 miles at 15:20 followed closely by Sophomore Waleed Totari and Senior Justin Coburn. Totari (25:24.0) and Coburn (25.28.2) closed out the Gaucho scoring just missing the top 10 in eleventh and twelfth.

UCSB head coach Pete Dolan rested Junior Tim Aukshunas coming off last week's strong second place finish in the home opener.
