Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's cross country team was victorious over its rival from Cal Poly, while the Gaucho men finished behind their counterparts from San Luis Obispo Saturday morning at the annual UCSB Open.
Senior Katie Appenrodt led a Santa Barbara sweep of the top three spots in the 5K women's race, crossing the finish line in 17:51 on UCSB's Lagoon Course. After Mustang senior Angela Petersen placed fourth at 18:42, Gauchos Vanessa Hernandez (18:52) and Lisa Dunn (18:55) rounded out the top six.
UCSB also took top honors on the men's side, as senior Brandon von Guenthner paced all competitors in the 8k event with his time of 24:46. The Laguna Nigel, Calif., native just edged out Cal Poly senior David Jackson, who clocked in at 24:48. The Mustangs would prove to be the deeper squad, as their top-five runners all crossed the finish line ahead of Gaucho senior Byron Lamorandier in 11th place at 25:40.
