Eric took an assistant coaching position with the team at the start of the 2004 season. As an athlete, Eric was an exemplary example of what the Gaucho program can do for runners. Coming out of high school with modest PR's of 4:19 and 9:42 in the 1600 and 3200, Eric would move on to be one of the fastest Gauchos to race in a UCSB uniform. Eric won the Big West Cross Country individual title in 2001 after taking 2nd by a 1.5 second margin the year before. In track, Eric's time in the 1500 (3:47.04) and 5k (14:12.43) are ranked number 2 and 3 on the all-time last. His honors include Big West Athlete of the year and 2 All Western Region honors. Eric's leadership was recognized by his teammates as he was team captain of the famed 2001 team.
2002 Track Recap: Set personal bests in the 1500 and 5k of 3:47.04 and 14:12, ranking as 2nd and 3rd respectively on the University's top ten list.
2001 XC Recap: Led the charge at the Conference Championships, taking first in a 1-2 effort with Josh Horton. Earned All-Western Region honors for the second straight year, and was a consistent top-3 runner for the team all year.
2001 Track: Red-shirted his 4th track season. Ran 3:51.49 in the 1500 meter event, a time that would have ranked on UCSB's all-time top ten list. Also logged a best in the 5,000 meters of 14:31.
2000 Cross Country: Finished 2nd by a second and a half margin at 2000 Big West Cross Country Championships.... 25th place at the Pre-NCAA Meet, an effort recognized as one of the finest cross country efforts ever posted by a Gaucho... Finished 23rd at NCAA West Regional Championships... 6th place finish in the 2000 Stanford Cross Country Invitational
2000 Track: Reduced his 5,000 meter best by over 40 seconds to clock a time of 14:37. Also scored for the team in the 1500 meter race at conference finishing 7th. Seasonal best in the 1500 was 3:55. Helped the team in the Big West Challenge Cup by finishing second in both the 1,500m and 3,000 meter races.
1999 Cross Country: Red-shirted but still competed as an unattached athlete. Logged a best of 25:20 on the UCSB lagoon course, and finished 6th in the Stanford Open race with a time of 25:33. His red-shirt season was punctuated with an 8k best of 24:35, finishing ahead of the entire USC and UCLA squads, and all but two of Cal's runners.
1999 Track: Earned a conference-qualifying mark in the 1500m race, and went on to log a personal best in the Conference finals, finishing 9th with a best of 3:57.
1998 Cross Country: Suffered a season-ending injury that cut his season short. Ran a 25:45 UCSB 8k time and was the team's 2nd-4th man.
1998 Track: Clocked a 15:18 5,000 meter time and a 4:00 1500m. Finished 10th at the conference 1500 meter finals race.
1997 Cross Country: An alternate for the Conference-Championship squad as a true freshman. UCSB 8k course best of 26:26. Ran the Stanford course in 27:00.
High School: For Dos Pueblos High School, Gans's most notable accomplishments were as a senior in track where he ran a 4:19 1,600. Also qualified for state in the 1,600 out of the competitive Southern Section. Personal best of 16:20 over the Mt. Sac course in cross country.Personal Info: Parents Carl and Deborah, and sister Lisl are UCSB Graduates. Carl competed on the UCSB Track & Field Team and can still be seen on the record board as a member of the school-record setting distance medley squad. Eric also has a twin brother Will, and another older sister Heidi.
Majoring in English with a minor in sports management.
