Santa Barbara, Calif. - Sophomore Nick Randazzo and junior Katie Camarena were distinguished with Big West Cross Country Athlete of the Week Honors thanks to their performances at this past weekend's UC Santa Barbara Lagoon Open, where they both came out on top in their respective races with Randazzo winning the men's 8k and Camarena winning the women's 5k. This makes two back to back Athlete of the Week honors for Randazzo while Camarena was able to take her first for the 2018 cross country season.
Randazzo, after winning the Mark Covert Classic just over two weeks ago, was able to best the likes of the Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton men's teams on his home course with numerous alumni in attendance to witness his individual victory, taking the title in 24:53.43. The young sophomore is actually sharing the accolades this week with CSUN's own Michael Merchan after the Matador clocked an impressive 24:32.7 at the UC Riverside Invitational over 8k on the same weekend.
Camarena was able to showcase her 1500m speed in the closing stages of the race by making up a 10 meter gap to the leaders coming off the final stretch, edging her teammate Astrid Rosvall at the line by less than a second with a 17:06.91 clocking. With a home win on her resume, this also marks the first time Camarena has won a cross country race at the collegiate level.
