Seeking a Three-Peat

The Gaucho men are coming off back to back Big West team titles, the first in school history. The 2015 squad relied heavily on the 1-2-3 punch of seniors Anthony Ortolan, Bryan Guijarro, and Shyan Vaziri, who left quite a legacy on the program. With that trio graduated, the returning men will have to rise up throughout the season to fill those important roles.

The Gaucho women rose up big time at last years Conference Championship with a surprise runner-up finish to Cal Poly SLO. They beat a talented UC Davis women's squad that was ranked ahead of them all year. They too graduated 3 scoring seniors but bring in a talented freshman class and a crew of returners that come off a successful 2016 track season.

Last year Head Coach Pete Dolan was awarded his 12th Big West Cross Country Coach of the Year award.

Dolan's Run

This fall, Head Track and Field/Cross Country Coach Pete Dolan will begin his 30th year at UCSB. Under Dolan's watch, the Gauchos have consistently finished in the top-third of the Big West in not just cross country, but also in track and field. By building balanced teams with a strong distance presence, Dolan has sharpened his athletes competitive ability by competing in team and dual meet competitions in an era where the collegiate invitational has become commonplace.

Dolan has won eleven Big West cross country team titles while mentoring ten individual conference cross country champions.

In 2006, Dolan guided the UCSB women to a 9th place finish at the NCAA Championships.

On the track, Dolan's women captured the Big West team title in 2006 and the men brought home their first team championship in 2012. In total, his teams have produced over 100 individual conference championship performances. Under his watch, 52 athletes have qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Recently, Dolan has continued to work with one of the most electric 800m runners in the country in Ryan Martin. As a Gaucho, Martin collected four All-American awards and became the #9 All-Time 800m runner in NCAA history for his 1:44.77 performance at the 2012 Big West Championships. Martin was fourth in the 2012 Olympic Trials and won bronze at the 2015 Pan Am Games. This past summer, he competed in his second Olympic Trials.

Martin runs professionally for Asics.
