The Week Ahead
After playing seven straight on the road, the No. 9 UCSB men's water polo team returns to Campus Pool on Thursday for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game against top-ranked USC at 4 p.m. The stay at home will be short lived though, as the Gauchos travel to No. 13 Santa Clara for a non-conference game on Friday and No. 3 Stanford for a MPSF contest on Saturday.
For The Record
After its narrow overtime loss to Long Beach State last Saturday, UCSB fell to 9-8 overall and 0-1 in MPSF play. The Gauchos have faced some recent struggles, dropping five of their last six games. Of their last six contests, three have been decided by one goal and two were decided by two goals. For the second consecutive week, UCSB is ranked ninth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-20 Poll.
Golic Earns MPSF Co-Player of the Week
Junior utility player Milos Golic was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mikasa Co-Player of the Week on Monday after posting a season-best six goals during Saturday's four-overtime thriller at Long Beach State. The six goals marked the third-highest single-game total in the MPSF this season and also helped move Golic into fourth-place on the Gaucho all-time scoring list with 177 career goals. The weekly award marked the second of Golic's career and his first this season. The Belgrade, Serbia native currently leads UCSB and ranks second in the MPSF with his 2.47 goals per game average (42 total). He is second on the squad with seven assists and ranks third with 24 earned penalties or ejections.
USC enters Thursday's game with an 18-1 overall record and a flawless 4-0 mark in MPSF play. Shea Buckner leads the team with an average of 1.53 goals per game (29 total) and goalie Joel Dennerley is averaging just 4.00 goals against per game, ranking second in MPSF. The Gauchos and Trojans have faced off twice this season in non-conference action; USC captured both games by 15-5 (Sept. 6) and 17-3 (Oct. 10) scores.
Bucking The Broncos
Santa Clara enters Friday's contest with the Gauchos with a 14-6 overall record and has won its last four straight, having defeated Cal Baptist, St. Francis, Brown and Air Force last weekend at a home tournament. The Gauchos faced the Broncos last on Sept. 21, 2008 when UCSB picked up a 14-6 victory at the Northern California Tournament.
Stanford enters Saturday's game with a 15-1 overall record and a spotless 3-0 mark in conference games. Drac Wigo - current MPSF Co-Player of the Week and brother of Gaucho head coach Wolf Wigo - currently leads the Cardinal and the MPSF with an average of 3.00 goals per game. His twin, Janson Wigo, is second on the team and tied fourth in conference with a 2.13 goals per game average. The Gauchos have won their last two pairings with the Cardinal; the teams last faced off on Nov. 9, 2008 when UCSB captured a 5-4 victory at Campus Pool.
We're Going Streaking
Three Gauchos are currently amidst scoring streaks: Noah Smith, Zsombor Vincze and Milos Golic. Vincze and Golic have both scored in the last five contests, marking the longest scoring streak of the year for Vincze and tying Golic's previous longest streak. Vincze is currently third on the squad with 17 goals on the year and ranks 15th in the conference with 1.55 goals per game. Smith is amidst a three-game scoring streak and is second on the squad with 26 goals. Smith is tied for 16th in the MPSF with USC's Shea Buckner with a 1.53 goals per game average.
Junior Fraser Bunn currently leads all goalkeepers in the MPSF for saves per game with his average of 9.90. The native of Melbourne, Australia has started 14 of the Gauchos' 17 games and has posted a total of 121 saves. Against Long Beach last Saturday, Bunn tallied a season-best 14 saves during regulation play. Freshman goalkeeper Myles Christian played the four overtime periods and collected six saves, he is averaging 10.1 saves per game.
Homestand On The Horizon
Following this weekend's Northern California road games, UCSB will return to Campus Pool next weekend for a four-game homestand. The Gauchos will host No. 3 Cal and Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 7 and will host No. 14 Pacific on Nov. 8. UCSB will complete its 2009 home schedule against No. 7 UC Irvine on Saturday, Nov. 14.
