SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore utility Brian Shoemaker led the No. 6 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team with a hat trick in Saturday's 12-10 upset victory over fourth-ranked Stanford at the SoCal Tournament at UCLA.
The win guaranteed the Gauchos a fourth-place finish at the tourney, which is the program's highest finish at the SoCal Tournament in at least the last decade. UCSB snapped a three-game losing streak against the Cardinal; its last win over the program was on Nov. 9, 2008.
Shoemaker also scored two goals earlier on Saturday in the Gauchos' 19-10 victory over No. 17 Concordia. His trio of goals against Stanford stretched his scoring streak to seven games, the longest streak by a Gaucho this season and the longest of his career.
Shoemaker and the rest of the Gauchos will be back in action this Sunday when they host two games at Campus Pool. They will welcome Concordia at 11 a.m. and then Harvard at 1 p.m. Admission is always free to UCSB home water polo contests.
