The Weekend Ahead
The undefeated UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team (2-0) will travel to Berkeley, Calif. this weekend for the Northern California Open. The Gauchos' first match will be against UC San Diego (3-3), which they defeated last Saturday by a score of 16-6 in a non-conference game. If the sixth ranked Gauchos defeat UCSD, they will play the winner between No. 4 Stanford and No. 15 UC Davis in their second game on Saturday. If they lose, they will play the loser of that same match-up.
Last Season in NorCal
UCSB went 2-2 at the 2009 NorCal Open, defeating Air Force in its first game before losing to Cal on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, the Gauchos defeated Pepperdine, but lost their afternoon game to Loyola Marymount. In all four games Milos Golic led the Gauchos in scoring, posting 12 goals during the tournament.
The Northern California Open features 16 teams and has four brackets. Bracket A includes No. 1 Cal, No. 8 Loyola Marymount, No. 9 Pepperdine and Pomona-Pitzer. Bracket B consists of No. 2 UCLA, No. 7 Pacific, No. 10 Long Beach State and no. 19 Air Force. Bracket C hosts No. 6 UCSB, No. 3 Stanford, No. 11 UCSD and No. 15 UC Davis. Bracket D has No. 4 USC, No. 5 UC Irvine, No. 13 Santa Clara and No. 14 Navy.
Senior Milos Golic will continue his quest to break the UCSB career goals record over the weekend. He needs just 22 more to surpass school record holder Larry Mouchawar. He has totaled 223 career goals with 11 this season. Golic currently leads all Mountain Pacific Sports Federation players with his 5.5 goals per game average. He is amidst a nine-game scoring streak dating back to Nov. 8, 2009 and has had multiple goals in each of those contests.
A three-time Olympian and former captain of the USA Water Polo Men's National Team, Wolf Wigo is now in his sixth season as the head coach at UC Santa Barabra. During his tenure with the Gauchos, Wigo has led UCSB to an 85-72 record. The Gauchos have finished the three of the past four seasons ranked sixth nationally. Wigo has led three players to All-American honors including Golic, who was the first UCSB first team honoree in over 20 years. He has led the Gauchos to three straight 2-0 or better season starts.
For The Record
The Gauchos opened the 2010 season two weeks ago when they played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a neutral site contest at Pepperdine. UCSB cruised to a 15-3 victory over the Stags behind multiple-goal performances from Golic (5), Brian Bishop (3), Zsombor Vincze (3) and Scott Bishop (2). This marks the fifth-consecutive season that UCSB has opened its season with a win. Last week No. 6 UCSB took out No. 11 UCSD, 16-6. Golic who had a game-high six goals, and Vincze, who had five, led the Gauchos. They helped UCSB improve to 2-0.
UCSB will return home next week to host No. 5 UC Irvine in a non-conference home contest at noon on Sunday, Sept. 26. Admission, as always, is free at Campus Pool.
