The No. 10 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team has a busy weekend scheduled in Stockton, Calif. The Gauchos will play a non-conference game at No. 14 Pacific on Friday evening before taking part in the annual NorCal Tournament being hosted on Saturday and Sunday by the Tigers at Chris Kjeldsen Pool and St. Mary's High School. UCSB will face Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival No. 7 UC Irvine in the first round of the tournament and depending upon the outcome, will either face-off with No. 2 USC or No. 20 Air Force in the second round, both contests will be played at St. Mary's High School.
Gauchos Defeat UC Davis in Home Opener
UCSB hosted UC Davis for the first of eight home contests during the 2008 season last Friday. The Gauchos posted a 7-5 victory over the visiting Aggies in the non-conference game. Sophomore Milos Golic led the charge with three goals while senior Miles Price had two. Junior goalkeeper Michael Robinson collected nine saves for the Gauchos. UCSB dominated the first half, outscoring Davis 4-1 in the first 16 minutes of play and held on for the 7-5 win while not once relinquishing the lead. UCSB holds a 3-2 overall record and after dropping from its No. 6 preseason ranking to No. 10 in last week's Collegiate Water Polo Association's Top-20 Poll, the Gauchos have maintained the 10th slot in the poll.
2007 MPSF Newcomer of the Year Milos Golic has gotten his sophomore year off on the right foot. The Belgrade, Serbia native has scored in all five contests this season to stretch his scoring streak to 10 consecutive games, nine of which have been multi-goal performances. Golic leads the team with 13 goals on the year and is averaging 2.6 goals per game, which ranks fifth amongst MPSF players and 12th nationally. He has additionally tallied a team-best five assists and three steals.
Number One Stunna
Junior goalkeeper Michael Robinson posted nine blocks on Friday, tying his career-high that he posted against Pomona-Pitzer on Sept. 10, 2006. For the season, Robinson is averaging seven saves per game and 5.3 goals against. Fellow goalie, Fraser Bunn, who has played in two of the Gauchos' five contests this season, is averaging 7.5 saves per game. The Gaucho defense ranks eighth nationally with their 7.8 goals against average.
Tracking the Tigers
Pacific enters Friday's game with a 6-3 overall record after posting five straight wins at the Inland Empire Tournament last weekend. Senior Will Milcovich and junior Grant Hollis lead the team, both averaging 1.55 goals per game. The Gauchos have faced the Tigers earlier this month, posting a 9-6 victory at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Sept. 7.
A Little Bit About the Anteaters
UC Irvine enters Saturday's match-up with a 0-1 record after falling to UCLA last Saturday, 10-4. Junior James Frank led the team with two goals in the loss. The Gauchos faced Irvine twice in 2007 and dropped both contests by just one goal (8-7 on Sept. 20 and 9-8 on Sept. 30).
Following this weekend's tournament, the Gauchos will take a week off before opening their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation schedule at USC on Saturday, Oct. 4 and UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 5.
