SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Miles Price of the No. 8 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mikasa Co-Player of the Week it was announced Tuesday by the conference. Price led UCSB (4-0) with four goals, including the gamewinner, in the championship match versus No. 6 Pepperdine at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational last Sunday.
Price shares the honor with Cal's Michael Sharf who posted 18 goals as the Bears went 4-0 at the Navy Invitational last weekend.
The Gauchos captured first-place at the UCSD tournament after defeating Pepperdine, 7-6 in the first-place match. In addition to his four goals against the Waves, Price scored a pair versus Pomona-Pitzer and one against both No. 17 Air Force and No. 8 UC San Diego. His eight goals were the most tallied by a Gaucho last weekend.
In addition to leading the Gaucho scoring, Price also collected three steals and three assists at the tournament and posted a .571 shooting percentage (8-for-14). The junior driver has also extended his scoring streak to 16 consecutive games, carried over from the 2006 season.
This is Price's first Mikasa Player of the Week honor. He was also named UC Santa Barbara's Golden 1 Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.
UCSB will attempt to improve upon its perfect 4-0 record this upcoming weekend when it heads to the Inland Empire Classic. The Gauchos will once again face-off with Pepperdine next Saturday in the tournament-opener at 10:20 am at LaVerne. UCSB will also play Cal Baptist, Pomona-Pitzer, Redlands and Chapman at the two-day event.
