SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Just two days after being picked to finish sixth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team has garnered a national ranking of No. 7 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Coaches Preseason Poll, which was issued on Wednesday.
The Gauchos' No. 7 ranking is not all that shocking of a prediction as they finished seventh in the poll last season. Cal, UCLA, Stanford, USC and UC Irvine rank first through fifth, respectively, as they did in the MPSF poll. Loyola Marymount, which is a member of the Western Water Polo Association, is ranked sixth.
UCSB earned 71 points in the poll, trailing LMU by three points and coming in three points ahead of No. 8 Pepperdine. All nine of the MPSF schools rank among the nation's top-10, further displaying the conference's dominance.
UCSB's season will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they play in an exhibition tournament at UCLA. The Gauchos will open at home on Sept. 11 against No. 11 UC San Diego.
