Zsombor Vincze Earns Golden Eagle Ring Award

May 8, 2008

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sixteen UC Santa Barbara student-athletes have been selected Golden Eagle Award winners, and three of those have been chosen as Golden Eagle Ring winners, including Zsombor Vincze of the men's water polo team, the UCSB Intercollegiate Athletics Department announced Wednesday.

The Golden Eagle Award represents a combination of athletic and academic achievement. The Golden Eagle Ring honorees represent the male and female student-athletes with the highest grade point average among all Gaucho athletes.

The 2008 Golden Eagle Ring winners are Brittany Kausen of women's tennis, Katy Freeman of women's swimming, and Vincze of men's water polo. Kausen, a senior bio-chemistry major from Irvine, Calif., and Freeman, a junior sociocultural linguistics major from Concord, Calif., each have a 3.64 grade point average, and Vincze, a junior business economics major from Szeged, Hungary, has a 3.85 grade point average.

Vincze, has already been honored for his academic success with All-Academic distinction from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team honors this year.

A two-time All-MPSF Honorable Mention, Vincze was third amongst the Gauchos during the 2007 season, scoring a total of 46 goals. He scored in 23 games and averaged 1.59 goals per game, good for 13th in the conference. The native of Szeged, Hungary had 13 multiple-goal games and had a streak of four straight games with multiple goals against top-four ranked teams. Vincze also led UCSB with a hat trick in a 9-7 win over Stanford, the program win over the Cardinal since 1985. He also led UCSB in earned penalties and ejections this year.

"These student-athletes represent the best of UC Santa Barbara," said UCSB Athletic Director Gary Cunningham. "There is nothing that makes me more proud than all the accomplishments of our Golden Eagle Award winners."

The UCSB Golden Eagle Award winners will be honored at a May 8 banquet to be held at Fess Parker's Doubletree Hotel in Santa Barbara. The banquet is sponsored by Pacific Beverage Co.
