STANFORD, Calif. - Despite five goals from senior Milos Golic, seventh-seeded UC Santa Barbara fell to No. 5 seed UC Irvine, 16-10, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament fifth-place game on Sunday at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center.
With the loss, UCSB ends the season with a 12-12 record. UC Irvine finishes 2010 with an 18-8 mark.
Griffin Lerman, who scored five goals for the Anteaters, carried UC Irvine to the win in the final half of the game. Doug Lindsay converted a penalty shot to break a 9-9 tie with 2:15 left on the clock in the third quarter. Lerman then scored three goals over the next five minutes to put Irvine up 13-10 with 6:22 to go in the game.
Prior to Lerman's run, the contest remained close throughout. Both teams traded goals over the first four minutes of the third quarter after UCSB came from behind to tie the game 6-6 at halftime.
UC Irvine was in control to start the second quarter before a goal from Golic with 2:09 left in the first half notched the contest at six-all.
Sunday's contest marked the last collegiate game for seniors Golic, Vincze, Fraser Bunn, Brian Bishop, Joe Plume and Russell Russo. Golic finishes his career at UCSB as the most prolific scorer in program history with his school-record 272 goals. Vincze finishes his career with 156 career goals, which is tied sixth all-time.
