IRVINE, Calif. - Freshman Tamas Donauer scored five goals on Saturday to lead the fifth-seeded UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team to a 13-11 win over No. 8 seed UC Irvine in the second round of the 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament being played this weekend at the Anteater's Aquatics Complex. The Gauchos, who lost to fourth-seeded Stanford on Friday, will face sixth-seeded Pacific in the fifth place game on Sunday.
With the win, UCSB's season record is lifted to 20-14, marking the first season in 16 years that the Gauchos have recorded 20 or more wins, the last time this feat was accomplished was in 1990 when UCSB posted a 23-9 season record. The Anteaters fall to 10-20 on the year.
UC Irvine grabbed the early lead in the first quarter outshooting the Gauchos 3-2, but UCSB turned things around in the second frame with five goals scored to jump out to a 7-5 lead at halftime.
The Gauchos dominated the third quarter allowing only one Anteater goal while posting three of their own. UC Irvine trailed 13-8 with two minutes remaining in the game before Curt Merlo scored twice and Taylor Wells posted one to cut the margin, but it proved too late as UCSB captured the 13-11 win.
With today's victory, the Gauchos end this season's series with UC Irvine, the team they have faced the most in 2006, with a 4-1 record.
Sunday's match with Pacific will be the second between the Tigers and Gauchos this year, UCSB came away with a 9-5 win on October 28 in Stockton, Calif. The fifth-place game is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. at UC Irvine's Anteater Aquatics Complex.
