No. 6 UC Santa Barbara Drowns No. 20 Cal Baptist, 12-7

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The No. 6 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team defeated No. 20 Cal Baptist University, 12-7 on Sunday afternoon at Campus Pool. Seven different Gauchos found the back of the net with Zsombor Vincze leading all scorers with three goals in the game. Santa Barbara improves to 19-12 while Cal Baptist falls to 23-11 on the season.

The Lancers won the first sprint of the game and scored first when sophomore driver Chris Morgan went around the head of UCSB freshman goalie Michael Robinson on a power play. The Gauchos returned the favor with a man advantage less than a minute later when freshman utility Zsombor Vincze put a hard shot directly beyond the reach of the Lancer goalie Jon Miller. Cal Baptist scored again with a goal from senior two-meter Mike Looy on the left side. The Lancers found the back of the net again with a spin shot from junior utility Ryan Steiger. Santa Barbara brought in a round of subs and sophomore driver Miles Price scored for UCSB with a skim shot at the 3:34 mark that brought the Gauchos to within one at 2-3. Junior driver Matt Dale scored next, going around the goalies head to tie the game at three. Cal Baptist scored the final two goals of the first period -- a seven-meter shot from sophomore driver Chris Morgan and off of a fast break from freshman utility Josh Harris.

The Lancers had two interceptions to begin the second period but sophomore driver Travis Watts with a shot from well beyond seven-meters three minutes into the second quarter. Senior utility Charlie Weaver scored one of his own for the Lancers less than a minute later to put some more distance between the two teams. Excellent team passing and Vincze gave the Gauchos another goal with three minutes left to play, brining the score to 5-6 still in favor of Cal Baptist. Dale went over two defenders to score Santa Barbara's next goal with 44 seconds left to knot the score at six. Sophomore utility Mark Knudtsen gave UCSB its first lead of the game with a goal with four seconds left in the half.

Price took his time, waiting for a good look before finding the back of the net, scoring first for the Gauchos in the third period. Despite being double teamed freshman two-meter Adam Massmann scored with four minutes left in the quarter to give the Gauchos a 9-6 lead. Three great saves from UCSB junior goalie James Street kept the Lancer offenses at bay for it did not score during the third quarter.

Weaver went for the left side and scored what would be Cal Baptist's final goal of the game in the fourth quarter. Vincze bounced his third goal of the game in to put the Gauchos ahead by three. Massmann found the back of the net, going over the Lancer goalie for his second goal of the game. Freshman Sean Castillo scored his first and UCSB's last goal of the game with a lob shot to bring to score 12-7.

Santa Barbara hosts its final home game of the year next Sunday at Campus Pool against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team Pepperdine at 12 p.m.
