Gauchos Post 7-6 Win Over MPSF Foe Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 7 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team posted a 7-6 win over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival, Long Beach State, which is also ranked seventh, Sunday afternoon at the 49er's Campus Pool. Senior Ross Sinclair posted his second goal of the game with 1:26 left to capture the win for the Gauchos.

UCSB improves to 18-11 overall and 3-4 in MPSF games while Long Beach State falls to 17-11 overall and 2-5 in conference play. This was the third game between the two teams and the third that was decided by one point; Long Beach had captured the previous two wins.

The Gauchos held a narrow 3-2 lead at halftime, but the 49ers were able to tie the game up at 4-4 after three quarters of play. Sinclair scored his first goal of the game at 6:57 in the fourth to regain the UCSB lead at 5-4, but Long Beach's Reid Tomassi answered right back at 5:17 to tie the score again.

Miles Price scored at 3:21 only to see 49er Jeff Greenwood tie the game up just 20 seconds later. Sinclair was able to break the tie with the game winner at 1:26 to take the 7-6 victory.

"This is why kids come to UC Santa Barbara to play water polo, to play in these competitive games" said head coach Wolf Wigo. "It was an exciting game with a great crowd and the guys played great."

Sinclair and Milos Golic led the Gauchos with two goals apiece while Long Beach's Reid Tomassi and Jeff Greenwood also had two goals.

Freshman Fraser Bunn had four saves in the first quarter for UCSB while Michael Robinson had six blocks and an assist in the final three quarters. Long Beach's Steve MacKenzie had six saves in the loss.

UCSB will conclude the regular season at Pepperdine next Sunday, Nov. 18. Game time is scheduled for noon.
