LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 7 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team was unable to overcome No. 3 UCLA Saturday afternoon at the Bruins Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, falling to its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe, 14-6.
The eight-point deficit marked the biggest margin of loss for the Gauchos this season. UCSB falls to 17-11 on the season and 2-4 in the MPSF while UCLA improves to 18-5 overall and 4-2 in conference.
Freshman Ben Hohl led the Bruins with a career-high four goals in the win while junior Krsto Sbutega finished with three goals.
Sophomore Zsombor Vincze led the Gauchos with two goals, marking his fourth consecutive game with multiple goals against a top-four ranked team.
Hohl opened the scoring with the first two goals of the game, the first coming at 5:50 and the second just 76 seconds later to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Matthew Jacobs found the back of the Gaucho net at 3:31 to put UCLA ahead 3-0 before junior Travis Watts was able to cut the margin to 3-1 with 18 seconds left in the quarter.
UCLA notched three goals in the first four minutes of the second quarter to stretch its lead to 6-1. Brian Bishop put one on the board with 3:38 left in the first half. Hohl responded with his third point of the game just 30 seconds later. Vincze tallied his first goal with 41 seconds left and the Gauchos entered halftime trailing, 7-3.
The Bruins outscored UCSB, 4-1, in the third quarter to extend their lead to 11-4. Sophomore Stefan Partelow scored the lone Gaucho goal of the period with 2:02 on the clock.
Senior Matt Dale opened the fourth period with a Gaucho goal during the first possession, but UCSB would score just once more with a penalty shot from Vincze. UCLA outscored UCSB 3-2 in the final eight minutes to take the 14-6 victory.
UCLA converted four of its nine six-on-five opportunities while the Gauchos went 1-for-8.
