SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Ramiro Saldain scored three goals, all in the second half, freshman Miles Price added a pair and UC Santa Barbara's defense did the rest as the 14th-ranked Gauchos defeated 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount in non-conference water polo action Thursday.
LMU got on the board first when Matt Reynolds - who tallied all three of his team's goals on the day - scored with 3:00 remaining in the first quarter. UCSB, however, responded 23 second later when Price netted the first of his goals to knot the score. Neither team scored again in the first quarter, but Gaucho sophomore Matt Tilburg broke the tie less than 30 seconds into the second period when he tallied a backhanded shot. Freshman Chris Lantz gave UCSB a 3-1 lead that it never relinquished with 5:29 to go in the second. Reynolds cut the gap to 3-2 with 4:48 remaining, but Price scored his second goal with just 16 seconds to go in the half to give the Gauchos a 4-2 lead at the break.
Santa Barbara used a strong defensive effort in the second half to ice the win. Senior goalkeeper Jon Bonafede, who finished with nine saves, had five in the final two quarters. Reynolds scored the Lions' only second half goal with less than a half second remaining in the third quarter. Saldain scored one of his goals in the third quarter and two in the fourth. UCSB blanked LMU in the final stanza to post the 7-3 win.
The victory improves UCSB's overall record to 13-14. The loss drops Loyola Marymount to 15-15 on the season. The Gauchos return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12, when they travel to Stanford in a 12:00 p.m. Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. The match will mark the first time that UCSB head coach Wolf Wigo will coach against his alma mater in a league match.
