Irvine, Calif. -
The No. 6 UCSB men's water polo team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 11 UC Irvine 9-5. Junior driver Ross Sinclair led all scorers with four goals, all of which came in the second half, and junior goalie Rick Wright had nine saves for the Gauchos, who are now 3-1 against Irvine this season. Santa Barbara improves to 18-11 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while Irvine falls to 8-15 and 1-4 in the MPSF.
Irvine scored the first and only goal of the first quarter and the first of the second before Santa Barbara got on the board in the second period. Sophomore driver Travis Watts, sophomore driver Miles Price and freshman driver Tamas Donauer all scored for UCSB to give the Gauchos the 3-2 advantage heading into the half.
With 5:23 left in the third period, junior two-meter Alex Young tagged on a goal for the Gauchos to put them up two over the Anteaters. Sixteen seconds later, Irvine player Cole Bielskis brought the Anteaters within one.
Santa Barbara and Sinclair capitalized on two power plays and another Gaucho goal gave UCSB a 7-3 lead partway through the fourth quarter. Sophomore driver Mark Knudtsen also contributed a goal for Santa Barbara while Taylor Wells had three and Bielskis added two for Irvine.
The Gauchos host a double header next Sunday with UCLA and Cal Baptist coming to town.
