SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team outscored No. 12 Long Beach State 6-1 in the second half to take a 9-3 victory in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation pairing played Saturday afternoon at the Gauchos' Campus Pool.

The Gauchos missed a pair of shots early in the first quarter before they faced an ejection with 5:35 on the clock. Long Beach took a shot just as the ejected player reentered the water, the ball hit the crossbar and was rebounded by Greg Henneman who shot and scored to put the 49ers on the board. Less than a minute later Travis Buchanan launched a shot that hit the sidebar before landing in the back of the Gaucho cage to bring the Long Beach lead to 2-0.
With a little over two minutes left in the first quarter, the ball was passed to Ross Sinclair who was able to fire it in for the first Gaucho goal of the day. The following possession a five-meter penalty was called against the Gauchos, the 49er shot was skipped and went high and the quarter ended with Long Beach holding a narrow 2-1 lead.
Over two and a half minutes into the second quarter, Stefan Partelow found himself open on a counter-attack and was able to get a shot off only to have 49er goalie Steve MacKenzie record a save. A few possessions later the ball reached Tamas Donauer who was able to penetrate from the outside and tie the score at 2-2 with a bar-in goal. Miles Price finally captured the lead for the Gauchos with a cross-cage shot with 2:46 on the clock to put the score at 3-2 heading into halftime.
Long Beach struck first in the second half as Kevin Bradley was able to capitalize on a six-on-five power play to once again tie the score up, 3-3. Santa Barbara quickly returned the favor as Price put away another cross-cage shot on a man-up situation to reclaim the Gaucho lead. With 2:20 left to play in the third, Sinclair took off on a fast break. Goalie Rick Wright connected with Sinclair who cut his player off and fired in his second goal of the game. Heading into the final quarter, the Gauchos led 5-3.
UCSB dominated the fourth quarter as they posted four unanswered goals including number three from both Price and Sinclair. All four goals in the final frame were scored during power play situations with Zsombor Vincze and Partelow rounding out the Gaucho scoring.
Junior goalkeeper Rick Wright tallied seven saves on the afternoon with a game-high three in both the first and third quarters. MacKenzie racked up nine saves for Long Beach.
UCSB will continue MPSF play on Sunday when they travel to UC Irvine to take on the Anteaters at noon in Anteater Pool.
