Nov. 2, 2008
STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 7 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team defeated Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent No. 19 Pacific in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Tigers' Chris Kjeldsen Pool. With the game tied 9-9 after four quarters, the Gauchos outscored Pacific 2-1 in the first of two overtime periods to capture the 11-10 victory.
With the win, UCSB improves to 13-8 on the season and 2-2 in MPSF contests. Pacific falls to 10-16 overall and 0-4 in MPSF action. Four of the Gauchos' last five contests have been decided in overtime and they have played a total of five overtime games this season, posting a 4-1 record in those match-ups.
Sophomore Milos Golic tallied all three of his goals in the first quarter, helping the Gauchos jump out to a 3-1 lead. UCSB did not lead for long though as Pacific's Austin Delong and Shane Mahoney posted back-to-back goals to open the second quarter, tying the game 3-3.
UCSB then built up a two-point lead behind goals from freshman Noah Smith and junior Stefan Partelow with 2:45 left in the first half. The Tigers were able to deadlock the game with 31 seconds left on the clock, but Smith scored with two seconds to go, giving the Gauchos a slight 6-5 advantage heading into the break.
In the third quarter, the Tigers outscored UCSB 4-1 with senior Miles Price tallying the only Gaucho goal of the period.
Trailing 9-7 heading into the final quarter of regulation play, the Gauchos were able to hold Pacific scoreless in the fourth while tying the game behind goals from Price and Kendell Olds, who scored the equalizer with 1:13 to play sending the game into overtime.
Junior Jesse Tootell scored the first overtime goal just 32 seconds into the period. Less than a minute later, Pacific's Joey Rossi tied the game up at 10-10 with a Tiger goal. With 36 seconds on the clock in the first overtime period, Price scored what would be the eventual game-winner to give UCSB an 11-10 advantage.
Golic and Price led the team posting three goals apiece while sophomore goalkeeper Fraser Bunn tallied 12 saves in the win.
UCSB will continue MPSF action next weekend at home when they host Long Beach State on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Stanford the following day. Both contests are scheduled for a noon start. Admission, as always, is free to all UCSB Athletics events at Campus Pool.
