BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 7 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team suffered an 11-8 loss at the hands No. 4 Cal on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears used a balanced attack with 10 different players scoring to capture their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory of the year.
With the loss UCSB falls to 12-8 overall and 1-2 in conference contests. Cal improves to 14-5 overall and 1-2 in the MPSF.
Junior Jesse Tootell opened the scoring with 5:26 to play in the first quarter, but Cal came back and tied the game with a point from Ivan Rackov with 3:48 on the clock.
The Bears opened the second quarter with three unanswered goals to gain a 4-1 advantage. Milos Golic and Miles Price put the Gauchos within one goal of the Bears with 2:31 to play in the first half, but Frank Reynolds poured on one more Cal goal to give the Bears a 5-3 advantage heading into halftime.
Cal posted four goals to open the second half, stretching its lead to 9-3 before UCSB was able to capitalize on a pair of five-meter penalty shots taken by Golic. At the end of three quarters, UCSB trailed 9-5.
For the first time during the pairing, UCSB outscored the Bears in the fourth quarter behind goals by Brian Bishop, Price and Golic, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit as the Gauchos fell 11-8.
Golic led the Gauchos for the fifth consecutive contest and tallied his third-straight four-goal showing. With his four points, Golic's current scoring streak stretches to 24 games. Junior goalie Michael Robinson tallied eight saves in the loss.
UCSB will continue action in northern California on Sunday when it travels to No. 19 Pacific for a noon match-up with the Tigers.
