SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
After downing Chapman 16-4 earlier in the day, the No. 14 Gauchos (12-12, 0-3) defeated Occidental College by a count of 13-3 on Sunday at Campus Pool.
Much like in the match against Chapman, UCSB came out shooting in the first half. The Gauchos posted six goals in the first and four goals in the second to take a 10-2 halftime lead. Brothers Chris Lantz and Coulson Lantz started the Gauchos in the winning direction by netting the first two goals of the match. Sophomore Matt Tilburg added another UCSB goal before Occidental's Andrew Valdes put the Tigers on the board. Following the score, Gauchos Travis Watts, Robbie Bauer and Mark Knudtsen each netted a goal to give UCSB a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter continued in the same direction for the Gauchos when UCSB posted the first three goals of the period. Sophomore Alex Young found the back of the net within the first minute of the third. After Watts added his second of the afternoon, sophomore Marc Morimoto tallied his only score of the match. With two minutes left in the first half, Tilburg added his second goal to give the Gauchos a 10-2 lead at the break.
The Gauchos managed to outscore the Tigers 2-1 in the third period. Junior Tyler Powell netted his only goal of the afternoon, which was quickly followed by Knudtsen's second. Occidental College's Cameron Brahmst posted his second goal of the game with one minute remaining in the third to cut the lead to 12-3. With a nine-goal advantage headed into the final period, Head Coach Wolf Wigo sent regular goalkeeper Rick Wright out to play the offensive end. Wright cashed in on a two-meter-shot opportunity to capture his first goal of the season and to give the Gauchos the 13-3 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Jon Bonafede posted four saves in the first half of the match. Sophomore James Street finished the match between the posts for UCSB, tallying three saves.
UCSB continues action this Saturday when it hosts Pacific in an MPSF conference match at 1 pm at Campus Pool.
