No. 14 UCSB Trounces Chapman, 16-4

Oct. 30, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Ten Gauchos scored at least one goal to lead fourteenth-ranked UCSB (11-12, 0-3) past Chapman by a score of 16-4 on Sunday at Campus Pool on the campus of UC Santa Barbara.

The Gauchos poured on the offense in the first half of play on Sunday. In the first quarter, UCSB posted five goals to Chapman's one score. Freshman left-hander Danny Natalizio got the Gauchos on the board first by netting the first of his match-high three goals on the afternoon. Chapman's Jameson Burmiester took advantage of a six-on-five opportunity and quickly answered back to knot the score at one. Unfortunately for the Panthers, that would be all the offense that they would generate in the first half of play. UCSB netted ten unanswered goals to close the half and give itself an 11-1 advantage at the break. Over the streak of ten unanswered, eight different Gauchos managed to find the back of the net--including Natalizio's second and third of the match and both of freshman driver Miles Prices' goals on the afternoon.

Freshman driver Travis Watts provided all the offense for the Gauchos in the third quarter. The Chino Hills, Calif. native extended UCSB's unanswered scoring streak to eleven when he netted the first of his two goals in the third quarter. One minute after Watts put it in the cage, Chapman answered back to make the score 12-2 in favor of UCSB. The Gauchos and Panthers swapped goals once more in the period, sending the match into the fourth quarter with the Gauchos holding a commanding ten-goal advantage. In the fourth, UCSB outscored Chapman once again, this time posting three goals to Chapman's one. Sophomore Matt Tilburg tallied his second goal of the match to start the fourth quarter for the Gauchos. Following Burmiester's second goal for Chapman, senior driver Bret DeMuth posted his second goal for the Gauchos. With fifteen seconds remaining in the match, goalkeeper Jon Bonafede found action on the other side of the pool when he came in and found the cage for his first score of the season.

Sophomore James Street got the start in goal for the Gauchos and posted three saves in the first half. Bonafede came in to play his regular position in the third quarter, tallying three saves on the match. Sophomore Rick Wright finished the match in goal for the Gauchos. The San Diego, Calif. native tallied four saves in the final period.

UCSB continues play later today when it hosts Occidental College at 2 pm at Campus Pool.
