SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman utility player Milos Golic posted a game-high four goals with five assists, but it was not enough as the No. 8 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team fell to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe No. 1 USC, 14-10, on Saturday afternoon at the Gauchos' Recreation Center Pool.
With the loss, UCSB falls to 16-9 on the season and 1-2 in MPSF games. USC remains undefeated at 13-0 and 4-0 in conference.
USC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, which was fueled by a pair of goals from Arjan Ligtenberg, in the first two and a half minutes of the game. Senior Ross Sinclair got the Gauchos on the board when he drew a foul outside the five-meter and fired one in at 5:24. The two teams traded a pair of goals, including a goal from Miles Price in the waning seconds of a six-on-five play, before USC's Matt Sagehorn had the last goal of the quarter with 42 seconds on the clock. USC led the game 5-2 after one period of play.
The Trojans stretched their lead to 7-2 with goals by Shea Buckner and Nico Sardo early in the second. Golic scored his first of four during a six-on-five power play with 4:39 on the clock. USC responded with a five-meter penalty shot from Sagehorn, which was followed a couple minutes later with a J.W. Krumpholz goal. Golic notched the last goal of the quarter, with just six seconds left, during a timeout play to enter halftime trailing, 9-4.
Sophomore Zsombor Vincze broke out in the third quarter for the Gauchos as he scored a hat trick in the eight-minute period. Goalie Rick Wright also had his best quarter as he posted four saves. Vincze opened the second half with back-to-back goals to cut the Trojan advantage to 9-6. Gabor Sarusin posted a six-on-five goal with 4:16 on the clock to extend the USC lead to 10-6.
Golic responded with his third goal, but the Trojans were able post back-to-back points, including Sagehorn's third of the game with 1:18 left in the quarter. Vincze put the Gauchos back within four when he scored with 22 seconds on the clock.
Jovan Vranes opened the scoring in the final quarter putting the Trojans ahead 13-8. UCSB continued to fight as Golic and Price each posted one apiece to put the Gauchos within three points with 4:19 left to play. USC was able to control the rest of the period as goalie Adam Shilling tallied four saves and Trevor Clark closed the game with man-up goal. The final score stood at 14-10.
The Gauchos' will continue MPSF action next week on the road when they visit No. 2 Stanford on Saturday, Oct. 27. First sprint is scheduled for noon.
