SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 8 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team captured its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory of the season with a 10-5 win over No. 13 Pacific on Friday evening at the Gauchos' Campus Pool. Senior driver Ross Sinclair posted a team-leading three goals in the win.
With the win, UCSB improves to 16-8 on the season and 1-1 in MPSF games. Pacific falls to 13-12 overall and 0-2 in conference play. This is the second win over the Tigers in less than a week for the Gauchos, they defeated Pacific 13-7 at last weekend's Southern California Tournament.
Sophomore Jesse Tootell opened the game with a goal out of two-meters just 42 seconds into play. Teammates Milos Golic, Sinclair and Dane Lindstrom followed suit, each posting a goal of their own to put the Gauchos ahead 4-0 with 2:08 on the clock in the first quarter. Pacific's Dragan Bakic got the Tigers on the board with a goal out of two-meters and Joey Rossi cut the Gaucho lead to two goals with a counter attack goal with 38 seconds left. At the end of the first quarter, UCSB led 4-2.
The Gauchos added a pair of goals in the second while holding the Tigers scoreless to enter halftime ahead, 6-2. Junior Miles Price stretched UCSB's lead early in the third quarter when the Gauchos drew a goalie ejection. Price found an opening in the goal between two Tiger defenders and posted the seventh UCSB goal of the game. A pair of goals were traded as Bakic scored his second of the game out of two-meters and Sinclair tallied his third.
An unguarded Mike Struempf fired a high-corner cross-cage shot to cut the Gaucho lead to 8-4. Daniel Natalizio had the last say for UCSB in the third quarter as he scored with 28 seconds on the clock to put UCSB ahead 9-4 with just eight minutes left to play.
Bakic scored the first goal of the quarter on a skip shot at 2:08, but it would be the last Tiger goal. Coulson Lantz rounded out the scoring when he was able to tip a well-placed pass from Mark Knudtsen into the Pacific goal to close the game at 10-5.
The Gauchos will host No. 1 USC on Saturday at noon. The game, which was originally scheduled to be played at Campus Pool, will now be played at UCSB's Recreation Center Pool.
