No. 9 UCSB Edged by No. 8 UC Davis in First Game of Long Beach State Mini Tournament, 4-3

LONG BEACH, Calif. - On the strength of a 3-0 first quarter edge and a pair of blocked penalty shots in the fourth quarter, eighth-ranked UC Davis edged ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara 4-3 Saturday morning in the first match of the Long Beach State Mini Tournament.

Trevor Long, Adam Lindsay and David Welch scored first quarter goals to give Davis its 3-0 lead after the first eight minutes. Gaucho Miles Price scored the first of his two tallies in the second period to cut the gap to 3-1, but the Aggies Joseph Smith found the back of the net with 3:56 to go in the second to give his team a 4-1 lead at the break.

UCSB tightened the noose defensively in the third period, but so too did Davis. The team's were scoreless in the period. The Gauchos, however, started to make waves in the final frame. Ross Sinclair, UCSB's leading scorer and one of the top scorers in the nation, netted a goal with 4:40 remaining make it 4-2 Aggies. Price scored his second goal of the morning with 2:11 left on the clock to make it 4-3.

The Gauchos had ample opportunity to tie the score in the fourth quarter. On two occasions they were awarded penalty shots, but each time they were denied by Davis goalie Mike McGee. The final penalty shot was taken by UCSB's Zsombor Vincze with 1:08 left to play. McGee finished with 11 saves for the Aggies. Wright, who was outstanding as well, had nine saves.

The loss was the second in a row for UCSB, which is now 12-6 on the season. The Gauchos second match of the day will be played this afternoon against Pepperdine.

In the other first round match in the tournament, Pepperdine stopped tournament host Long Beach State, 12-9.
