No. 8 UCSB Takes Down No. 12 UC San Diego, 13-10

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In a game which saw a combined 10 goals scored in the third period and a total of six ties, the No. 8 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team defeated No. 12 UC San Diego by a 13-10 score in front of 1,003 fans at the Triton's Canyonview Pool on Friday evening.

With the non-conference win, UC Santa Barbara improves to 12-7 on the season while UCSD drops to 9-7.

The Gauchos were led by freshman Milos Golic, who posted four goals, and sophomore Zsombor Vincze, who recorded a hat trick in the win. UC San Diego's Daniel Garcia led all players with five goals for the Tritons.

UCSD took the lead in the first quarter, firing in the first two goals of the game. The Gauchos were able to cut the Triton lead to just one goal and headed into the second quarter trailing 2-1.

The two teams were tied three times in the second frame before Golic scored with 37 seconds left in the first half to give the Gauchos a narrow 5-4 lead heading into halftime.

UCSD staged a comeback early in the second half as they scored the first three goals of the third quarter and jumped out to a 7-5 lead. Santa Barbara rallied back with a pair of goals and a goal with 3:03 left in the third regained the Gaucho lead at 8-7. Garcia scored with 2:47 on the clock to tie the game at 8-8. The game was tied once more with 1:08 to play before the Gauchos put one in with 20 seconds on the clock to take the 10-9 lead heading into the final quarter.

UCSB won the sprint to start the fourth quarter and scored to open up an 11-9 lead. The Tritons cut it to 11-10 with 7:07 remaining. UCSB's defense dominated the rest of the way, and the Gauchos added goals at the 4:20 and 3:08 marks to close the scoring at 13-10.

The Gauchos will take the rest of this weekend off and will be in action next Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Southern California Tournament being hosted by UC Irvine. UCSB will take on Loyola Marymount in its first match of the tourney at 9:20 am on Saturday morning.
