No. 6 Gauchos Overtake No. 4 Stanford for First Time in Two Years

Oct. 2, 2010

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - After cruising past No. 17 Concorida University (2-5), 19-10, sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (7-2) upset No. 4 Stanford (5-3), 12-10 on Saturday, the first day of play at the SoCal Tournament being held at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

Stanford took the early 3-2 lead, but the momentum shifted and UCSB came back strong in the second quarter by posting six goals.

After halftime, the Gauchos matched goal-for-goal with Stanford, 3-3 in the third and 1-1 in the fourth. The 12-10 victory marks the first time since Nov. 9, 2008 that UCSB has won a match against Stanford.

Brian Shoemaker, who has scored a goal or more in the last seven games, led the team with three goals against the Cardinal. He finished the first day of tournament play with five goals.

Milos Golic also had strong outings in both games, leading the Gauchos for scoring with six goals against Concordia and he scored twice in the second game against Stanford.

Golic is now only four goals away from surpassing the 27-year old school record for career goals, which is held by Larry Mouchawar (1980-83), who recorded 244.

Against Stanford, Brian Bishop and Dylan Baliani both scored twice, while Noah Smith, Zsombor Vincze and Lazar Komadinic all posted a goal in the game. Fraser Bunn and Myles Christian each played a half in the cage, recording five and six saves, respectively, against the Cardinals.

In the first game of the day, the Gauchos took an early lead over Concordia, 6-4, and never looked back. They led the Eagles during each quarter of the game and outscored Concordia 8-2 in the second half.

Sam Evans stepped up for the Gauchos and recorded three goals. Ryan Flint, Vincze and Smith recorded two goals each, while Komadinic and Baliani each scored a goal for the Gauchos.

Fraser Bunn led the Gauchos with four saves in the game.

After posting two victories on the first day, UCSB is guaranteed to finish in the top-four of the tournament. The Gauchos will now look forward to Sunday morning when they take on No. 1 USC (13-0) at 10:40 a.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Center on the UCLA campus.
