Sept. 19, 2010

BERKELEY, Calif. - After splitting its first two games of the Northern California Invitational on Saturday - including a heartbreaking one-goal loss to No. 4 Stanford - sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (5-1) defeated No. 7 Pacific (6-2) and fifth-ranked UC Irvine (5-2) on Sunday to take fifth-place in the tournament, which was being played at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex.

UCSB took Sunday's first game over Pacific by a score of 9-5 and then took game two versus Irvine, 10-9.

In the fifth-place game against UC Irvine, the game was tight early with each team scoring four goals in the first quarter. The second period was dominated by UCSB as the Gauchos shut out the Anteaters while scoring two goals to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.

UCSB stretched its lead to 10-7 in the third quarter. The Anteaters came within one goal of tying the Gauchos in the fourth as they out-shot UCSB, 2-0 in the final quarter, but the Gauchos never relinquished their lead and held on for the 10-9 victory and fifth place finish.

Milos Golic led all players with his four goals in the victory. Brian Bishop and Dylan Baliani followed Golic with two goals each. Brain Shoemaker and Zsombor Vincze also posted a goal each for UCSB.

In the cage, Fraser Bunn blocked four shots in the first half for UCSB and Myles Christian took over for the second half and also had four saves.

Before facing the Anteaters, UCSB took on Pacific in Sunday's first game. In the first quarter, the Gauchos jumped out to a 3-2 lead and each team exchanged a goal in the second quarter.

UCSB's offense surged in the second half, as the Gauchos outscored the Tigers, 5-2 to take the 9-5 victory.
