BERKELEY, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara water polo team split matches on the first day of the NorCal Invitational. The Gauchos defeated UC San Diego 10-7 and then dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to Stanford in the second match of pool play.
In the first game, against the Tritons, the Gauchos jumped out to a 4-1 lead at the end of one period. With a three-goal second quarter, the lead increased to 7-2 at the half. San Diego tallied five goals in the second half while the Gauchos scored three to bring the final score to 10-7.
Milos Golic, who is verging on becoming UCSB's all-time leading scorer, had two of the Gauchos goals. Brian Shoemaker and Noah Smith each had a pair as well. Lazar Komadinic, Ryen Flint, Brian Bishop and Joe Plume had one apiece.
UCSB's top goalkeeper, Fraser Bunn, had a pair of save. Myles Chirstian collected three and Joe Lovero had six.
In the second game of the day for the Gauchos, they battled Stanford.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but UCSB used a 2-0 second quarter surge to tie the score at half,3-3.
The match was nip-and-tuck the whole way. UCSB and Stanford each scored a pair of goals in the third quarter and the score was tied at the end of three, 5-5.
Stanford tossed in a pair of scores on the fourth period while the Gauchos had one and the Cardinal eked-out a 7-6 victory.
The loss drops UCSB to 3-1 on the season. Stanford improves to 4-0.
Once again, it was Milos Golic who was leading Santa Barbara as he notched a pair of goals. Brian Bishop, Matt Gronow, Brian Shoemaker and Zsombor Vincze each had one. Myles Christian had seven saves in goal while Fraser Bunn came-up with a pair. Stanford's Brian Pingree had eight.
The Gauchos will play two more matches in the Northern California Invitational on Sunday. The opponents will be determined by the end of the late Saturday night contests.
