PALO ALTO, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team divided its two matches against Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara with the help of Tamas Donauer and Ross Sinclair who each posted four goals on the day.
The Gauchos got off to a slow start on day one of the tournament as LMU jumped-out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter. While the teams played to an 8-8 tie over the final three quarters, the Lions topped UCSB, 11-8.
After the Lions seized the edge, the Gauchos kept things close by putting five on the board in the second quarter and they trailed at the half, 6-5. Loyola outscored Santa Barbara 2-1 in the third quarter and took an 8-6 lead.
The final quarter began with the Lions leading by a pair. UCSB made it a game by scoring two but LMU pulled away, throwing three more into the goal, ending the match with an 11-8 victory.
In its second match of the tournament, UCSB went up against Santa Clara. The match was tied after one quarter, 3-3, but that is when the Gauchos took control, outscoring the Broncos in the second period, 5-2.
Santa Barbara led 8-5 at the half. The Gauchos erupted in the third quarter with an impressive seven goals, adding to their lead, 15-7. With six deflections, Gauchos' goalkeeper Rick Wright, a native of San Diego, helped his team to a 16-8 victory over the Broncos. Sinclair and Matt Dale led UCSB with three goals each while Price, Donauer, and Travis Watts each scored two.
With the 1-1 record on day one of the Nor Cal Tournament, the Gauchos are now 8-3 on the season. On Sunday, UCSB will play either Pepperdine or Princeton at noon.
