DAVIS, Calif. - No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (9-1) stretched its current win streak to five consecutive games with a 9-6 win over non-conference opponent No. 8 UC Davis (3-3) Friday afternoon at the Aggies' Schaal Aquatics Center. Senior driver Ross Sinclair, who posted three goals in the win, led the Gauchos.
Just over a minute into the first half of the game, Sinclair notched the first goal of the game to put the Gauchos on the scoreboard at 1-0. Sinclair posted his second goal with 3:06 on the clock in the first quarter to spread the UCSB lead to 2-0 heading into the second frame.
The Gauchos were able to draw an ejection early in the second quarter and capitalized on the man-up situation with a goal from Travis Watts. A pair of ejections ensued but neither team was able to score during their six-on-five possession. With 2:53 left to play in the first half, UCSB drew a five-meter penalty. Stefan Partelow took the free-shot for UCSB and scored, putting the Gauchos ahead, 4-0.
On the next possession, the Aggies were finally able to penetrate the Gaucho defense as Grant Muenter scored his first of two goals, putting UC Davis on the board. A little over a minute later, Ratko Paunovic found the back of the cage for UCSB to put the Gauchos ahead, 5-1 heading into halftime.
Within the first minute of the second half, UCD was able to draw an ejection, but despite calling a time-out and setting up a play, the Aggies could not find the back of the net. Shortly thereafter, UCSB drew its fourth ejection of the game and Zsombor Vincze posted the Gauchos' sixth goal on a six-on-five power play. Several minutes later, Sinclair scored his third goal of the game to spread the Gaucho lead to 7-1. The Aggies managed a pair of goals in the last minutes of the frame, including a buzzer-beater from Arrigo, cutting the UCSB lead to 7-3.
Arrigo caught fire in the final quarter scoring a trio of goals against the Gauchos, but UCSB was able to preserve its lead and added two more goals, including one from freshman Milos Golic in his collegiate debut, to take the game at 9-6.
The Gauchos continue their road trip on Saturday as they begin action at the two-day Northern California Open being hosted by No. 2 Cal. UCSB will face No. 11 Loyola Marymount tomorrow morning at 9:20 am at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Cal's campus.
