No. 6 Gauchos Cruise Past No. 11 UC San Diego in Home Opener

Sept. 11, 2010

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On a foggy Saturday afternoon, eleventh-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team took on the No. 6 ranked UC Santa Barbara in the Gauchos' home opener at Campus Pool. UCSB defeated the Tritons, 16-6, in the non-conference game.

Gaucho senior Milos Golic had a game-high six goals and was closely followed by senior Zsombor Vincze, who had five. The leading scorer for the Tritons was sophomore Brian Donahoe with two goals. UCSB improves to 2-0 on the season while UCSD is now 3-3.

Golic and Vincze both extended their scoring streaks, Golic now has nine consecutive games with multiple goals dating back to the 2009 season and Vincze has five-straight games with multiple goals.

The first period favored the Gauchos, who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Although goalkeeper David Morton had five saves in the period for UCSD, two goals were scored when the Gauchos were a man-up; Golic had both.

The second period saw the Gauchos jump out to a 5-0 lead with another goal by Golic and one by Vincze. The Tritons mounted a small comeback and got within three goals two different times during the period. The first time, Donahue and senior Bryce Madsen cut the lead to three with 4:07 left in the second quarter. The only other time the game was close, junior Graham Saber scored to put UCSD within three with 3:20 left but the Gauchos took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

At the half, senior goalkeeper Fraser Bunn had 10 saves and that was enough for him, he was subbed out for sophomore goalkeeper Myles Christian. Christian recorded four saves in each of the last two periods with an incredible interception to stop an easy score on a Triton breakaway in fourth.

Golic led the Gauchos offensively in the second half as well, posting another three goals, one of which came on a penalty shot and another when the Gauchos were up on a 6-on-5.

Evan Dellinger, Geng Wang, Noah Smith and Matt Puig all scored goals in the second half.

The Tritons recorded three goals in the third period, their best coming with one second left. UCSD freshman Luke Syka received a pass on the post, which he quickly deflected for the goal. The period ended with a Gaucho lead of 12-6.

To start the game the Tritons were shut out until five minutes left in the second quarter. The Gauchos repeated this tough defensive scheme to end the game as well, shutting out UCSD in the fourth period to take the 16-6 victory.

The shot of the game happened in the third period when Vincze flipped the ball into the net with a no-look backhand shot. He fooled the goalkeeper and put his team up 9-4 in the third.

The Gauchos had several streaks of greatness by taking a five-nothing run to start the game and then had another five-nothing run in the third period. They set the tone of the game by starting hard in each of the halves.

Golic continues his dominance by increasing his career goals total to 223. He needs just 22 more to surpass school record holder Larry Mouchawar.

Next on the schedule for the Gauchos is the NorCal Tournament in Berkley on the 18th and 19th of September. The next home game is against UC Irvine on Sept. 26.
