LA VERNE, Calif. - Led by junior driver Ross Sinclair, the 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara water polo team completed a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Inland Empire Tournament on Sunday with a 16-5 win over La Verne and a 15-6 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.
Sinclair, who finished with 21 goals in the five matches, tallied three in the win over La Verne and five in the victory over Pomona-Pitzer.
The Gauchos started quickly in Sunday's first match against La Verne, taking a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. UCSB didn't let-up, outscoring the Leopards 5-2 in the second period to take a commanding 9-2 lead at the half.
With the help of junior goalkeeper James Street, who deflected two shots, the Gauchos shutout the Leopards 3-0 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, UCSB scored the first four goals to take an insurmountable 16-2 lead. The Leopards tallied three to end the match. Sinclair, Jesse Tootell and Coulson Lantz each had three goals to lead the Gauchos to the victory.
The final match of the tournament for UCSB was against Pomona-Pitzer. The first quarter of play ended with the Gauchos leading by a narrow 2-1 margin. When the first half ended, however, UCSB had extended the lead to 6-2.
Freshman goalkeeper Michael Robinson led Santa Barbara's first half defensive effort with nine first-half saves.
The Sagehens kept things close in the third quarter by scoring a trio of goals. UCSB, however, had four to take a 10-5 lead into the final stanza. The Gauchos outscored Pomona-Pitzer in the fourth quarter by a 5-1 tally and won going away, 15-6.
By going 5-0 on the weekend, the No. 10 Gauchos are now 7-2 on the season.
UCSB returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when it travels to the NorCal Tournament in Palo Alto, Calif. The Gauchos will take-on Loyola Marymount in their first match of the tournament. The tourney will also be a homecomeing for UCSB head coach Wolf Wigo, a four-time All-American at Stanford.
