Sept. 8, 2007

POMONA, Calif. - The No. 6 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team dropped its first game of the season on Saturday in an 11-9 loss to No. 7 Pepperdine in the opening game of the 2007 Inland Empire Classic being held this weekend at Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer and LaVerne. The Gauchos rebounded with a 12-10 win over No. 20 Cal Baptist and an 11-5 win over No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer later in the day.

After going 2-1 on Saturday, UCSB now holds an overall record of 6-1 on the season.

In the first game of the day, the Gauchos fell victim to the very team they last beat. After taking Pepperdine down 7-6 in last weekend's UCSD Triton Invitational championship game, the Waves were able to return the favor with an 11-9 victory over the Gauchos.

Both teams tallied a single goal in the first quarter before UCSB distanced itself in the second, outscoring Pepperdine, 3-1 to lead 4-2 heading into halftime. Pepperdine had a strong third quarter as they outscored UCSB 5-2 to take a narrow 7-6 lead. The Gauchos were unable to stage a comeback in the fourth, falling 11-9.

Sophomore Zsombor Vincze led the Gauchos with three goals while Stefan Partelow, Travis Watts and Jesse Tootell each notched two goals apiece. Senior goalie Rick Wright tallied six saves in the loss.

In game two, UCSB overtook No. 20 Cal Baptist, 12-10. Dane Lindstrom led UCSB with a hat trick in the win over the Lancers. Fraser Bunn and Michael Robinson split time in the cage tallying seven and four saves, respectively.

In the final match-up of the day, the Gauchos defeated No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer for the second time in two weeks, this time by way of an 11-5 score. Senior Ross Sinclair posted a team-high five goals in the win. Bunn collected six saves while Robinson had four.

The Gauchos will conclude action at the Inland Empire Classic on Sunday with a game versus Redlands 10:20 am and Chapman at 2:20 pm. Both games will be played at Redlands.
