REDLANDS, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team captured three wins on the opening day of the Inland Empire Tournament defeating Whittier 17-4, Claremont Mudd-Scripps 17-6 and Redlands 13-8 Saturday at Redlands. Junior Ross Sinclair led the Gauchos posting 13 goals on the day.
UCSB opened tournament play against Whittier where the Gauchos jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. As the second quarter began, Whittier pulled closer with three goals but the Gauchos got right back in the match with three goals themselves to lead the first half 9-3.
In the third quarter, redshirt freshman goalie Michael Robinson helped the Gauchos tallying two saves while the offense went on to post six more UCSB goals. The final quarter began with UCSB throwing two more in the cage to end the match with the 17-4 win. Sinclair, Stefan Partelow, and Drew Ratcliffe led the Gauchos with three goals apiece.
The second game of the day was against Claremont Mudd-Scripps. The Gauchos outscored Claremont 4-0 in the first quarter. UCSB added five more goals in the second while Claremont put two on the board. The Gauchos won the third and fourth quarters 4-2, ending the match 17-6. Sinclair led UCSB with four goals in the match and Rick Wright had three saves.
In Saturday's third and final match, the Gauchos went toe-to-toe with the University of Redlands. The first quarter was close with UCSB capturing the early lead, 3-2. The Gauchos gained a further lead in the second as they outscored the Bulldogs 4-2 to lead 7-4 heading into halftime.
The second half began with UCSB scoring three goals but Redlands closed the gap with two goals. The final quarter began with Redlands coming closer with two more goals, but the Gauchos scored three to win the match 13-8. Sinclair once again led UCSB with six goals while Coulson Lantz ended with day with two goals against the Bulldogs. Wright helped the Gauchos with seven saves in the game.
The Inland Empire tournament resumes play tomorrow as the Gauchos head to the campus pool of La Verne to take on the Leopards at 9:00 a.m. followed by a game against Pomona-Pitzer at 3:00 p.m.
