LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore driver Coulson Lantz scored three goals while sophomore Robbie Bauer and freshman Mark Knudtsen (Los Altos, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) each added a pair to lead UC Santa Barbara past Pomona-Pitzer 11-4 in the first round of the UC San Diego Invitational Water Polo Tournament.
The victory marked the debut for first-year UCSB head coach Wolf Wigo.
The Gauchos and Sagehens were tied 2-2 after the first quarter of play, but UCSB outscored its opponent 8-1 over the next two periods to put the match out of reach. Lantz scored all three of his goals during the pivotal second and third quarters.
The 11th-ranked Gauchos lost their second match of the day, a 7-5 decision to Loyola Marymount.
In the loss the Lions, UCSB couldn't overcome a 6-2 deficit after three quarters. The Gauchos did outscore LMU 3-1 in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap. In fact, when Knudtsen scored with 2:18 remaining it made the score 6-5, but Santa Barbara could not score again.
Play will continue in the UCSD Invitational on Sunday. The Gauchos will take-on UC San Diego's "B" team at 7:00 a.m.
