UCSB Opens Season With Convincing Wins Over Air Force and Pomona Pitzer

Sept. 1, 2007

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Ross Sinclair and Dane Lindstrom led the No. 7 ranked UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team with four goals apiece on the opening day of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational being played at the Triton's Canyonview Aquatic Center this weekend. The Gauchos posted an 11-5 win over No. 17 Air Force before defeating Pomona-Pitzer, 19-4 Saturday afternoon.

With the pair of wins, UCSB opens the 2007 season with a 2-0 record.

Sinclair began the season for the Gauchos with the first goal of the day a little over two minutes into the first quarter versus Air Force on a six-on-five possession. Air Force answered back a few minutes later, but UCSB quickly distanced itself with three consecutive goals, including two from Lindstrom, to hold a 4-1 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Air Force defense picked up in the second frame as each team just managed a single goal in the second quarter. UCSB tallied a pair of goals in the third frame, including a five-meter penalty goal scored by Miles Price.

Air Force managed two goals in the fourth quarter but the Gauchos held their lead and won the game 11-5 with Stefan Partelow leading the team with a hat trick.

During the second match-up of the day, UCSB jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals from Zsombor Vincze within the first minute and a half against Pomona-Pitzer. At the end of the first quarter, the Gauchos held a 4-1 lead. The Santa Barbara onslaught picked up steam in the second quarter as the Gauchos outscored Pomona-Pitzer 7-0.

The Gauchos gave up just three goals in the second half as they posted eight more points of their own. Coulson Lantz and Vincze each collected a hat trick in the game while redshirt freshman Brian Bishop posted his first collegiate goal in the third quarter.

UCSB continues action at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Sunday. The Gauchos are scheduled to take-on host UCSD at 11:45 a.m. That result of that game will determine what the place the Gauchos will play for on Sunday afternoon.
